Winter 2023 Tile Drop: It’s Not That Serious
Hello Hello, Dear Reader!
Where on Earth has Chaotic Good Jewelry been, you ask? Well, it’s no secret that my Etsy storefront and socials have been dormant for a few months – for good reason, but we’ll get to that. First off, I’d like to reintroduce myself using my artist name, Juniper Chaos! Juni for short. If you know me IRL, you probably know about my Spy Kids obsession – Juni felt like a natural choice. I’ve been thinking about my title as a small business owner lately – how does Chief Entropy Officer sound? Too corporate?
Let’s skip ahead to good part, the stuff I’ve been keeping under wraps since last summer. Tiles! But Juni, what on this cursed blue planet is a tile? Well, a thin slab of artfully embellished resin, my dear reader, is what I’m referring to. You see, I come from a fine art background (MICA class of 2017, what’s GOOD), and have made a whole lot more than jewelry over the course of my career as an artist. I’ve often felt boxed in by the constraints of the fashion industry, exploring sculpture, fiber, illustration, and even film as the medium best fit to express myself. I have a lot more to say than can fit on your earlobes – why stick to one thing? In what feels like a pretty obvious shift for me, I’ve spent the last year exploring what fine art made from resin can look like, and the last several months documenting it all for you!
(For the OG’s in the building, don’t worry, I’m defo still making vampire fang earrings – you can head on over to my Etsy to get your hands on ‘em.)
This first tile drop is an unserious commentary on substances used to treat chronic pain and to work continually toward mental wellness.
In other words: Ah! Ow! Why does everything hurt so much!? Why is my doctor gaslighting me?! Can we make sitting down at the club into a thing?? For all my chronically ill baddies out there, I hope we can build a cozy community together and look hot while doing it!
I’ve learned quite a bit about resin as a medium over the years since I started Chaotic Good. Turns out you can do so much more with resin than just mold it into vampire fangs. Notably, I’ve discovered the “petri dish” effect, where you use differently weighted alcohol pigments to push color through the resin while it hardens, creating an unpredictable psychedelic effect. If forces me to work upside down for the most part, with the finished result only visible once the resin has fully cured and I can pop it out of its mold. Groovy! I’ve also done a lot of trial and error figuring out how to make each of the objects I want to feature in a tile perform their best under resin, and not look soggy or cloudy. I’ve developed quite an alliance with my laminator, to say the least.
Every tile in this drop is for sale – if you’re interested (yoooo), please head here and send me an email. Tile pricing available upon request. Prints are also coming soon for those on a budget, and for those who prefer their art on their walls!
This is my first tile drop of many, and I plan on releasing more tiles each season, so subscribing to my newsletter for a heads up on those isn’t a bad idea! I hope to also make an appearance at a few craft festivals and markets this year too, so sign up below so you don’t miss an opportunity to say hi in person. You can also follow me on Instagram and TikTok, for some behind the scenes, announcements, general tomfoolery and hijinks. We love a 21st century queen.
It’s been a long time away from my little audience, and I’m so happy to be back! See you in the spring for the next tile drop, my friend.
Chaotically,
Juni
